# Git Commit Guidelines for AI Language Models

## Core Principles

1. **Follow Conventional Commits** (https://www.conventionalcommits.org/)
2. **Be concise and precise** - No flowery language, superlatives, or unnecessary adjectives
3. **Focus on WHAT changed, not HOW it works** - Describe the change, not implementation details
4. **One logical change per commit** - Split related but independent changes into separate commits
5. **Write in imperative mood** - "Add feature" not "Added feature" or "Adds feature"
6. **Always include body text** - Never use subject-only commits

## Commit Message Structure

```
<type>(<scope>): <subject>
<body>
<footer>
```

### Type (Required)

- `feat`: New feature
- `fix`: Bug fix
- `refactor`: Code change that neither fixes a bug nor adds a feature
- `perf`: Performance improvement
- `style`: Code style changes (formatting, missing semicolons, etc.)
- `test`: Adding or updating tests
- `docs`: Documentation changes
- `build`: Build system or external dependencies (npm, gradle, Xcode, SPM)
- `ci`: CI/CD pipeline changes
- `chore`: Routine tasks (gitignore, config files, maintenance)
- `revert`: Revert a previous commit

### Scope (Optional but Recommended)

Indicates the area of change: `auth`, `ui`, `api`, `db`, `i18n`, `analytics`, etc.

### Subject (Required)

- **Max 50 characters**
- **Lowercase first letter** (unless it's a proper noun)
- **No period at the end**
- **Imperative mood**: "add" not "added" or "adds"
- **Be specific**: "add email validation" not "add validation"

### Body (Required)

- **Always include body text** - Minimum 1 sentence
- **Explain WHAT changed and WHY** - Provide context
- **Wrap at 72 characters**
- **Separate from subject with blank line**
- **Use bullet points for multiple changes** (use `-` or `*`)
- **Reference issue numbers** if applicable
- **Mention specific classes/functions/files when relevant**

### Footer (Optional)

- **Breaking changes**: `BREAKING CHANGE: <description>`
- **Issue references**: `Closes #123`, `Fixes #456`
- **Co-authors**: `Co-Authored-By: Name <email>`

## Banned Words & Phrases

**NEVER use these words** (they're vague, subjective, or exaggerated):

❌ Comprehensive
❌ Robust
❌ Enhanced
❌ Improved (unless you specify what metric improved)
❌ Optimized (unless you specify what metric improved)
❌ Better
❌ Awesome
❌ Great
❌ Amazing
❌ Powerful
❌ Seamless
❌ Elegant
❌ Clean
❌ Modern
❌ Advanced

## Good vs Bad Examples

### ❌ BAD (No body)
```
feat(auth): add email/password login
```

**Problems:**
- No body text
- Doesn't explain what was actually implemented

### ❌ BAD (Vague body)
```
feat: Add awesome new login feature
This commit adds a powerful new login system with robust authentication
and enhanced security features. The implementation is clean and modern.
```

**Problems:**
- Subjective adjectives (awesome, powerful, robust, enhanced, clean, modern)
- Doesn't specify what was added
- Body describes quality, not functionality

### ✅ GOOD
```
feat(auth): add email/password login with Firebase
Implement login flow using Firebase Authentication. Users can now sign in
with email and password. Includes client-side email validation and error
handling for network failures and invalid credentials.
```

**Why it's good:**
- Specific technology mentioned (Firebase)
- Clear scope (auth)
- Body describes what functionality was added
- Explains what error handling covers

---

### ❌ BAD (No body)
```
fix(auth): prevent login button double-tap
```

**Problems:**
- No body text explaining the fix

### ✅ GOOD
```
fix(auth): prevent login button double-tap
Disable login button after first tap to prevent duplicate authentication
requests when user taps multiple times quickly. Button re-enables after
authentication completes or fails.
```

**Why it's good:**
- Imperative mood
- Specific problem described
- Body explains both the issue and solution approach

---

### ❌ BAD
```
refactor(auth): extract helper functions
Make code better and more maintainable by extracting functions.
```

**Problems:**
- Subjective (better, maintainable)
- Not specific about which functions

### ✅ GOOD
```
refactor(auth): extract helper functions to static struct methods
Convert private functions randomNonceString and sha256 into static methods
of AppleSignInHelper struct for better code organization and namespacing.
```

**Why it's good:**
- Specific change described
- Mentions exact function names
- Body explains reasoning and new structure

---

### ❌ BAD
```
feat(i18n): add localization
```

**Problems:**
- No body
- Too vague

### ✅ GOOD
```
feat(i18n): add English and Turkish translations for login screen
Create String Catalog with translations for login UI elements, alerts,
and authentication errors in English and Turkish. Covers all user-facing
strings in LoginView, LoginViewController, and AuthService.
```

**Why it's good:**
- Specific languages mentioned
- Clear scope (i18n)
- Body lists what was translated and which files

---

## Multi-File Commit Guidelines

### When to Split Commits

Split changes into separate commits when:

1. **Different logical concerns**
   - ✅ Commit 1: Add function
   - ✅ Commit 2: Add tests for function

2. **Different scopes**
   - ✅ Commit 1: `feat(ui): add button component`
   - ✅ Commit 2: `feat(api): add endpoint for button action`

3. **Different types**
   - ✅ Commit 1: `feat(auth): add login form`
   - ✅ Commit 2: `refactor(auth): extract validation logic`

### When to Combine Commits

Combine changes in one commit when:

1. **Tightly coupled changes**
   - ✅ Adding a function and its usage in the same component

2. **Atomic change**
   - ✅ Refactoring function name across multiple files

3. **Breaking without each other**
   - ✅ Adding interface and its implementation together

## File-Level Commit Strategy

### Example: LoginView Changes

If LoginView has 2 independent changes:

**Change 1:** Refactor stack view structure
**Change 2:** Add loading indicator

**Split into 2 commits:**

```
refactor(ui): extract content stack view as property in login view
Change inline stack view initialization to property-based approach for
better code organization and reusability. Moves stack view definition
from setupUI method to lazy property.
```

```
feat(ui): add loading state with activity indicator to login view
Add loading indicator overlay and setLoading method to disable user
interaction and dim content during authentication. Content alpha reduces
to 0.5 when loading.
```

## Localization-Specific Guidelines

### ✅ GOOD
```
feat(i18n): add English and Turkish translations
Create String Catalog (Localizable.xcstrings) with English and Turkish
translations for all login screen strings, error messages, and alerts.
```

```
build(i18n): add Turkish localization support
Add Turkish language to project localizations and enable String Catalog
generation (SWIFT_EMIT_LOC_STRINGS) in build settings for Debug and
Release configurations.
```

```
feat(i18n): localize login view UI elements
Replace hardcoded strings with NSLocalizedString in LoginView for title,
subtitle, labels, placeholders, and button titles. All user-facing text
now supports localization.
```

### ❌ BAD
```
feat: Add comprehensive multi-language support
Add awesome localization system to the app.
```

```
feat: Add translations
```

## Breaking Changes

When introducing breaking changes:

```
feat(api): change authentication response structure
Authentication endpoint now returns user object in 'data' field instead
of root level. This allows for additional metadata in the response.
BREAKING CHANGE: Update all API consumers to access response.data.user
instead of response.user.
Migration guide:
- Before: const user = response.user
- After: const user = response.data.user
```

## Commit Ordering

When preparing multiple commits, order them logically:

1. **Dependencies first**: Add libraries/configs before usage
2. **Foundation before features**: Models before views
3. **Build before source**: Build configs before code changes
4. **Utilities before consumers**: Helpers before components that use them

### Example Order:

```
1. build(auth): add Sign in with Apple entitlement
   Add entitlements file with Sign in with Apple capability for enabling
   Apple ID authentication.
2. feat(auth): add Apple Sign-In cryptographic helpers
   Add utility functions for generating random nonce and SHA256 hashing
   required for Apple Sign-In authentication flow.
3. feat(auth): add Apple Sign-In authentication to AuthService
   Add signInWithApple method to AuthService protocol and implementation.
   Uses OAuthProvider credential with idToken and nonce for Firebase
   authentication.
4. feat(auth): add Apple Sign-In flow to login view model
   Implement loginWithApple method in LoginViewModel to handle Apple
   authentication with idToken, nonce, and fullName.
5. feat(auth): implement Apple Sign-In authorization flow
   Add ASAuthorizationController delegate methods to handle Apple Sign-In
   authorization, credential validation, and error handling.
```

## Special Cases

### Configuration Files

```
chore: ignore GoogleService-Info.plist from version control
Add GoogleService-Info.plist to .gitignore to prevent committing Firebase
configuration with API keys.
```

```
build: update iOS deployment target to 15.0
Change minimum iOS version from 14.0 to 15.0 to support async/await syntax
in authentication flows.
```

```
ci: add GitHub Actions workflow for testing
Add workflow to run unit tests on pull requests. Runs on macOS latest
with Xcode 15.
```

### Documentation

```
docs: add API authentication guide
Document Firebase Authentication setup process, including Google Sign-In
and Apple Sign-In configuration steps.
```

```
docs: update README with installation steps
Add SPM dependency installation instructions and Firebase setup guide.
```

### Refactoring

```
refactor(auth): convert helper functions to static struct methods
Wrap Apple Sign-In helper functions in AppleSignInHelper struct with
static methods for better code organization and namespacing. Converts
randomNonceString and sha256 from private functions to static methods.
```

```
refactor(ui): extract email validation to separate method
Move email validation regex logic from loginWithEmail to isValidEmail
method for reusability and testability.
```

### Performance

**Specify the improvement:**

❌ `perf: optimize login`

✅
```
perf(auth): reduce login request time from 2s to 500ms
Add request caching for Firebase configuration to avoid repeated network
calls. Configuration is now cached after first retrieval.
```

## Body Text Requirements

**Minimum requirements for body text:**

1. **At least 1-2 complete sentences**
2. **Describe WHAT was changed specifically**
3. **Explain WHY the change was needed (when not obvious)**
4. **Mention affected components/files when relevant**
5. **Include technical details that aren't obvious from subject**

### Good Body Examples:

```
Add loading indicator overlay and setLoading method to disable user
interaction and dim content during authentication.
```

```
Update signInWithApple method to accept fullName parameter and use
appleCredential for proper user profile creation in Firebase.
```

```
Replace hardcoded strings with NSLocalizedString in LoginView for title,
labels, placeholders, and buttons. All UI text now supports English and
Turkish translations.
```

### Bad Body Examples:

❌ `Add feature.` (too vague)
❌ `Updated files.` (doesn't explain what)
❌ `Bug fix.` (doesn't explain which bug)
❌ `Refactoring.` (doesn't explain what was refactored)

## Template for AI Models

When an AI model is asked to create commits:

```
1. Read git diff to understand ALL changes
2. Group changes by logical concern
3. Order commits by dependency
4. For each commit:
   - Choose appropriate type and scope
   - Write specific, concise subject (max 50 chars)
   - Write detailed body (minimum 1-2 sentences, required)
   - Use imperative mood
   - Avoid banned words
   - Focus on WHAT changed and WHY
5. Output format:
   ## Commit [N]
   **Title:**
   ```
   type(scope): subject
   ```
   **Description:**
   ```
   Body text explaining what changed and why. Mention specific
   components, classes, or methods affected. Provide context.
   ```
   **Files to add:**
   ```bash
   git add path/to/file
   ```
```

## Final Checklist

Before suggesting a commit, verify:

- [ ] Type is correct (feat/fix/refactor/etc.)
- [ ] Scope is specific and meaningful
- [ ] Subject is imperative mood
- [ ] Subject is ≤50 characters
- [ ] **Body text is present (required)**
- [ ] **Body has at least 1-2 complete sentences**
- [ ] Body explains WHAT and WHY
- [ ] No banned words used
- [ ] No subjective adjectives
- [ ] Specific about WHAT changed
- [ ] Mentions affected components/files
- [ ] One logical change per commit
- [ ] Files grouped correctly

---

## Example Commit Message (Complete)

```
feat(auth): add email validation to login form
Implement client-side email validation using regex pattern before sending
authentication request. Validates format matches standard email pattern
(user@domain.ext) and displays error message for invalid inputs. Prevents
unnecessary Firebase API calls for malformed emails.
```

**What makes this good:**
- Clear type and scope
- Specific subject
- Body explains what validation does
- Body explains why it's needed
- Mentions the benefit (prevents API calls)
- No banned words
- Imperative mood throughout

---

**Remember:** A good commit message should allow someone to understand the change without looking at the diff. Be specific, be concise, be objective, and always include meaningful body text.

# Post-Implementation Audit

Independently audit completed code changes using available evidence.

This workflow is read-only. Find meaningful problems when they exist; do not manufacture findings.

## Scope and boundary

Follow the current task, applicable repository instructions such as `AGENTS.md`, and the actual implementation context.

Do not broaden the audit merely because additional review is possible.

Do not implement, remediate, refactor, stage, commit, or intentionally modify repository state while this workflow is active.

If a required verification step would intentionally modify tracked files, do not run it during the audit. Report it as a verification limitation and return that work to an implementation/remediation phase.

Unexpected side effects from otherwise appropriate verification commands must be reported, not reverted or cleaned up.

Do not create an audit file unless explicitly requested.

## 1. Establish target and baseline

Determine what change is actually being audited before judging it.

When Git is available, prefer the baseline in this order:

1. explicit baseline or commit range from the task;
2. a known implementation start point supported by context;
3. clearly attributable staged or working-tree changes.

Never select an arbitrary number of recent commits as the baseline.

Distinguish implementation changes from pre-existing or unrelated repository changes.

If the boundary cannot be established reliably, state the limitation and audit only what can be attributed with reasonable confidence.

Do not invent missing requirements, acceptance criteria, history, or implementation boundaries.

## 2. Verify requirements, correctness, and regressions

Trace available requirements and acceptance criteria to the implementation.

Check for meaningful issues such as:

- missing or partial behavior;
- incorrect requirement interpretation;
- regressions or unintended behavior changes;
- scope creep or unrelated modifications;
- incorrect logic or state transitions;
- relevant error or failure paths;
- plausible boundary, lifecycle, async, concurrency, persistence, caching, or integration problems.

Inspect enough surrounding code to understand the changed behavior.

Only investigate risk areas that are plausible for the implementation.

Review security, performance, data integrity, or deployment concerns only when the change makes them relevant.

Do not report subjective style preferences or speculative possibilities as defects.

A maintainability concern is a finding only when it creates a concrete correctness, reviewability, change-safety, or long-term engineering risk.

## 3. Verify evidence

Run the smallest relevant set of non-mutating verification commands needed for confidence.

Expand verification when scope or risk warrants it.

Never claim that a command, test, path, or behavior was verified unless it actually was.

If important verification cannot be completed, record:

- what was not verified;
- why;
- what confidence is lost.

A verification limitation is not automatically a finding.

Treat it as a finding only when the missing verification itself violates an explicit requirement or represents a concrete defect.

## 4. Review commits when applicable

When commits are part of the audited implementation, verify that each represents one coherent concern and is independently understandable, reviewable, and reasonably revertible.

Report material problems such as:

- unrelated concerns mixed together;
- hidden scope expansion;
- accidental unrelated changes;
- misleading commit boundaries;
- excessive size that materially harms reviewability or rollback safety.

Do not require commits when none were authorized or expected.

## 5. Complete the full audit

Do not stop at the first issue.

Complete the full in-scope review and collect every meaningful finding supported by evidence.

Each finding must be backed by code, diff, test output, command output, reproducible behavior, or a credible demonstrated failure path.

Distinguish fact from inference.

After completing the audit, report the result and stop. Do not remediate findings.

## Severity

Use severity only for actual findings:

**Critical** — catastrophic failure, severe security compromise, irreversible data loss/corruption, or fundamentally unusable core behavior.

**High** — major incorrect behavior, serious regression, significant security/reliability failure, or failure of an important requirement.

**Medium** — real actionable defect with bounded impact.

**Low** — minor but legitimate defect with limited concrete impact.

Do not use `Low` for optional polish or subjective preference.

## Result

Use exactly one primary result:

### CLEAR

Use when:

- no meaningful finding remains;
- intended behavior is sufficiently established;
- relevant verification completed successfully;
- no material unexplained verification gap remains;
- no material scope contamination exists.

### FINDINGS

Use when one or more meaningful implementation findings exist.

Verification limitations may be reported alongside `FINDINGS`.

### INCOMPLETE

Use when no meaningful implementation defect has been established, but missing context or important verification prevents a reliable `CLEAR`.

Do not treat absence of discovered defects as proof of correctness.

## Re-audit

When previous findings are available, preserve their identifiers and mark each:

- `RESOLVED`
- `UNRESOLVED`
- `NOT VERIFIED`

Verify the underlying issue, not only its visible symptom, and check whether remediation introduced regressions.

Then perform a fresh audit of the affected scope.

Do not invent prior finding IDs when they are unavailable.

## Output

Start with:

**Result:** `CLEAR` / `FINDINGS` / `INCOMPLETE`

Briefly state:

- scope audited;
- baseline used;
- important evidence inspected;
- verification commands actually executed;
- material limitations.

For each new finding include:

**ID:** `AUDIT-001`
**Severity:** Critical / High / Medium / Low
**Evidence:** concrete supporting evidence
**Impact:** concrete failure or risk
**Recommended remediation:** smallest appropriate correction
**Verification:** how a re-audit can prove resolution

For re-audited findings also include:

**Status:** RESOLVED / UNRESOLVED / NOT VERIFIED

For `INCOMPLETE`, state what evidence is missing.

For `CLEAR`, state that no meaningful findings remain and summarize the evidence supporting that conclusion.

Do not invent owners, deadlines, metrics, findings, or recommendations merely to make the report appear more comprehensive.

# Implementation Workflow

Implement the requested change safely, minimally, and in a reviewable form.

## Scope and priority

Follow the current task, applicable repository instructions such as `AGENTS.md`, and established project conventions.

Do not expand scope merely because adjacent improvements are possible.

This skill governs implementation and remediation. Independent post-implementation review belongs to `post-implementation-audit`.

## 1. Inspect before changing

Before editing:

- understand the requested behavior and acceptance criteria;
- inspect the relevant existing implementation;
- inspect repository status when Git is available;
- identify pre-existing modified, staged, deleted, or untracked files.

Treat unrelated existing changes as protected.

Do not overwrite, discard, normalize, or accidentally include unrelated work.

## 2. Decide whether a plan is needed

Proceed directly when the task is small, localized, low-risk, and sufficiently clear.

For substantial work, use an implementation plan first unless an approved plan already exists.

Work is substantial when it involves meaningful architectural uncertainty, multiple interacting components, migrations, public contracts, broad behavioral changes, or significant security/reliability risk.

When a new plan is required, produce the plan and stop before modifying the repository so it can be reviewed.

Do not create ceremonial plans for trivial work.

## 3. Implement narrowly

Once implementation is authorized:

- make the smallest coherent change that satisfies the task;
- preserve existing architecture and conventions unless the task intentionally changes them;
- prefer existing mechanisms over unnecessary parallel abstractions;
- avoid unrelated refactoring, cleanup, renaming, formatting churn, dependency changes, or speculative improvements;
- preserve unrelated changes in files that must also be edited.

Do not weaken tests, validation, error handling, or existing guarantees merely to make the new implementation pass.

## 4. Preserve repository state

Do not discard existing work to obtain a clean repository.

Unless explicitly required and authorized, do not use destructive or history-rewriting operations such as:

- `git reset`
- `git restore`
- `git stash`
- `git clean`
- rebase
- amend
- squash
- other history rewriting

Work around unrelated dirty state instead of erasing it.

## 5. Verify the implementation

Use the smallest relevant verification first, then expand when scope or risk warrants it.

Relevant verification may include targeted tests, static analysis, linting, type checking, builds, or repository-specific checks.

Add or update tests when needed to prove changed behavior.

Test meaningful behavior and failure paths rather than merely mirroring implementation details.

Never claim verification that was not actually performed.

If relevant verification cannot run, report the limitation rather than assuming success.

## 6. Create commits only when authorized

Create commits only when explicitly authorized by the current task or applicable repository instructions.

When commits are authorized:

- each commit must represent one coherent concern;
- keep unrelated implementation, cleanup, formatting, documentation, and refactoring concerns separate unless inseparable;
- keep commits independently understandable, reviewable, and reasonably revertible;
- use meaningful commit messages.

Before each commit:

1. inspect repository state;
2. identify exactly which changes belong to the concern;
3. stage only those changes;
4. inspect the staged diff;
5. commit only after confirming its scope.

Prefer explicit file or hunk staging.

Do not use broad staging such as `git add .` when it could capture unrelated changes.

Do not rewrite existing commits unless explicitly requested.

## 7. Finish and hand off

Before declaring implementation complete:

- confirm the requested behavior and acceptance criteria are addressed;
- run relevant final verification;
- inspect the final diff for accidental or unrelated changes;
- report unresolved limitations honestly.

For substantial implementations, hand off to `post-implementation-audit` after implementation changes stop.

If the audit reports findings:

1. return to an implementation/remediation phase;
2. fix only supported findings with the smallest coherent change;
3. verify the remediation;
4. run `post-implementation-audit` again.

Repeat until the audit is `CLEAR` or an unresolved limitation is explicitly reported.

Small, localized changes need an independent audit only when the task, repository instructions, or risk justifies one.

## Output

At completion, concisely report:

- what changed;
- important implementation decisions;
- verification actually performed;
- material limitations or unresolved issues;
- commits created, if any.

Do not reproduce this workflow as a checklist in the final response.

# Git Commit Message Quality Coach

You coach commit messages so `git log` stays useful six months later. Prefer teaching rewrites over silent fixes.

## Files in this skill

- `scripts/check_commit_msg.py` — subject/body linter (stdlib only)
- `references/conventional-commits.md` — types, scopes, breaking changes
- `references/subject-line-rules.md` — length, imperative mood, what to omit
- `templates/review-notes.md` — feedback format
- `examples/example-commit-coaching.md` — worked coaching session

## Workflow

### 1. Collect input
- The commit message(s), and if available: `git log -1 --format=%B`, or a list from `git log --oneline`.
- Optionally the diff summary: `git diff --stat` / `git diff --cached --stat`.
- Note repo conventions if present (COMMIT_EDITMSG template, commitlint config).

### 2. Lint
```bash
python3 scripts/check_commit_msg.py path/to/MSG
echo "fix: add retry" | python3 scripts/check_commit_msg.py -
```
Use findings as leads; style guides may intentionally differ.

### 3. Evaluate
For each message, using the references:
1. Is the **type** accurate for the change?
2. Does the **subject** use imperative mood and finish the sentence "If applied, this commit will …"?
3. Does the body explain **why** / tradeoffs, not restate the diff?
4. Are breaking changes marked (`BREAKING CHANGE:` or `type!:`)?
5. Is there noise (CI IDs, "WIP", file lists already in the diff)?

### 4. Rewrite
- Provide a **recommended message** ready to paste.
- Keep author intent; do not invent product motivations you cannot see — ask or mark assumptions.
- For multi-commit cleanups, suggest squash boundaries when messages are redundant.

### 5. Write coaching notes
Fill `templates/review-notes.md` like `examples/example-commit-coaching.md`.

## Verdicts (per message)
- **GOOD** — ship as-is (nits optional).
- **NEEDS EDIT** — rewrite provided.
- **SPLIT OR SQUASH** — history structure is the real problem.

## Rules
- Never amend, rebase, or force-push unless the user explicitly asks.
- Do not leak secrets from diffs into message examples.
- Prefer one strong subject over witty vagueness.

- Wrap near 72 cols when practical.
- Bullet lists OK for multiple motivations.

# Subject line rules

1. **Imperative mood:** "add", "fix", "remove" — not "added" / "adds" / "adding".
2. **Complete the sentence:** "If applied, this commit will …"
3. **~50 characters ideal, 72 hard max** for the subject (tooling varies).
4. **No trailing period** on the subject.
5. **Capitalize** only if your project style requires; Conventional Commits often use lowercase after the type colon — **follow the repo**.
6. **Avoid** issue-only subjects ("fix #123"); mention the bug, reference the issue in the body/footer (`Fixes #123`).
7. **Avoid** file dumps ("update utils.py and helpers.go") — say the intent.
8. **One logical change** per commit when teaching good history.

# Commit Message Coaching: feature/rate-limit

## Context
- Diff summary: auth middleware + Redis token bucket + docs
- Repo style: Conventional Commits + commitlint

## Per-commit feedback

### Commit a1b2c3d
**Verdict:** NEEDS EDIT
**Original:**
```
updated stuff for API
```
**Issues:**
- Missing type/scope
- Vague ("stuff"); past tense
- No why

**Recommended:**
```
feat(api): add per-token rate limiting
Prevent partner storms from exhausting the primary DB pool.
Uses Redis token bucket with fail-open if Redis is unavailable.
```
**Why this is better:** States the capability, the motivation, and a critical failure-mode choice.

### Commit d4e5f6a
**Verdict:** GOOD
**Original:**
```
docs(api): document rate-limit headers
```
**Issues:** none material

## Patterns to practice
- Lead with user/system impact, not file names.
- Record fail-open/fail-closed decisions in the body.
